Concept to Creation Series: Who In the World Am I? with Silvia Levenson

This is the last in our 'Concept to Creation' series - "I believe that learning new techniques is so important as the act of sharing, questioning and reflecting. In my Masterclass we will speak about my own experiences and vision about the creative process." - Silvia Levenson.

Seminar Outline by Silvia Levenson:

“Who in the world am I? That is the great puzzle!”

In this Live Online Masterclass, I will share with you my own experiences in glass and art and how I found my own voice, even if I do not have any formal education in glass or art.

I love travelling and when I'm abroad and have to introduce myself, I often find myself taking part in this dialogue:

Question: Where do you live?

Answer: In Italy.

Question: Fantastic!  What do you do for a living?

Answer: Uhm... I make objects in glass

Question: No, really!? So, you live on Murano?

Answer: No, on Lake Maggiore near Milan.

Question: Ah. But you do blow glass, don't you?

Answer: No, but...

Question: [Disappointed face] How can you make beautiful vases if you don't blow the glass on Murano?

Answer: Actually, I don't make vases, but objects, installations, hand grenades, etc.

Question: But do you at least use Murano glass?

Answer: No... Actually, I use Bullseye Glass made in Portland, Oregon...

Question: So you’re not Italian?! [with a somewhat irritated expression]

Answer: Uhm well... actually I'm Argentinian.

At this point, I invent an urgent telephone call and walk away, not least because I'm tired of disappointing my fellow men and women and their expectations. The truth is that sometimes we need to label people and things.

But creativity is not about labels but about experiences: how we think and how we make

As far as I'm concerned, the two actions of doing and thinking are intrinsically bound together. In my world, artistic practice is a journey that leads me to discover new possibilities, not just material, but also mental.

To continue Alice in Wonderland's reflection: "Who in the world am I?" Am I an artist? Am I Argentinian? Italian? Citizen of the world? Am I an artist in glass? Feminist? Human rights activist? Artisan? Do I belong to another generation? Am I contemporary? At this point, just like Alice, the answer is "that is the great puzzle!"
